A cat stayed in the animal shelter for nearly a year without anyone picking him. But then, the perfect family adopted him. Now, he’s really happy in his new home.
Luka is a black and white cat with a cool mark on his nose like an exclamation mark. He came to the Exploits Valley SPCA when he was seven months old. Right away, he was super friendly to people and started hanging out with the other cats in the shelter, playing and snuggling with them.
The SPCA said, “Luka is one of the best cats ever! He just wants love and to give love. He’s always cuddling or head-butting the other boys, his kitty roommates.” Even though he made everyone happy, Luka stayed at the shelter for many months.
Even though Luka had been at the shelter for ten months with not much attention from people wanting to adopt him, the staff kept posting about him on social media, hoping to find him a family. They said, “Many people believe it’s tough to find homes for black cats, but actually, it’s black and white ones statistically.”
By this time, Luka was one and a half years old. He had made friends with lots of new cats that came to the shelter and saw others leave to go to their forever homes.
“Sometimes cats stay in the shelter for a long time, and we don’t know why. But then, a really perfect home comes along, and it all makes sense. That must be what happened for this guy.”
After more than 330 days, someone applied to adopt Luka, and it turned out to be the perfect match for him. It was like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Luka and his feline roommates
“He’s a really sweet cat, and we couldn’t understand why nobody chose him before. But now, we realize he was waiting for Paula.”
Less than two years ago, Paula’s cats, who she had for 15 years, passed away. She was really sad and decided she wouldn’t get any more cats. But six months later, she went to a local rescue to donate some food, and that’s where she met a gorgeous calico cat named Chole who she instantly fell in love with.
Luka and his forever mom Paula
“I’ve had Chole for a bit more than a year, but I felt like there was another cat who needed a mom,” Paula said.
Paula often checks the SPCA’s Facebook page and loves seeing the pictures and stories of the animals they rescue. “But when I saw Luka’s face, I felt something special. I just knew he was coming home with me.”
When Paula met Luka for the first time, she held him, and he snuggled into her like they were old friends. “It was love right away.”
Luka got comfortable in his new home with Paula and Chole. He took on the job of checking out the food in the kitchen and made sure to inspect all of Paula’s meals.
Luka the food detective
Whenever Paula opens the fridge, Luka quickly runs over and investigates what’s inside, like a detective.
At first, Chole wasn’t too thrilled about having a new cat around. But Luka was really interested in her. He tried hard to make friends with her, darting around the room and inviting her to play, even though she just watched him at first.
Luka is obsessed with Chole the calico
“All Luka wants is to be friends with Chole. He’s really focused on it.”
He followed Chole everywhere, even onto the kitchen counter, and he hung out with her on the couch. He made sure to give her space and patiently waited for her to warm up to him.
After many attempts to charm her, one day, Luka hopped on the couch to be next to her and gave her a bath. “I never thought Chole would ever allow him to groom her, but she did until he decided to go ninja on her.”
Luka loves napping on Paula’s lap. After waiting almost a whole year at the shelter, he’s finally living the happy life he always hoped for.

The SPCA said, “This proves you should never give up on these cats. ‘Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.'”
