Jordan Driskell, who’s 31 years old, found a clever way to handle his situation. He bought leashes made for kids to keep his lively little ones under control when they’re out in public.
Before, he used a big stroller that fit all his kids, but it became a hassle. The kids didn’t like being stuck in it, and it was hard to take with them wherever they went.
Now, with the leashes, the kids can explore when they’re out with their family without Jordan worrying about losing them or not being able to control them. It helps keep them safe!
Driskell shared a video of their trip to the aquarium, where the kids were on leashes. This got a lot of negative feedback aimed at the parents. The video went viral with over 3 million views. Many people commented, saying that kids shouldn’t be treated like animals with leashes.
Some said, “If you can’t handle it, don’t have so many kids.”
Others tried to give advice, but it came off as rude. They said, “Why don’t you teach your kids properly? Explain to them why running away is dangerous.”
Dr. Deborah Gilboa, who knows a lot about parenting and how teenagers grow, has a different view. She doesn’t think using a leash makes a child feel like an animal. And if the only other option is staying home, then using a leash is definitely better!
Dr. Gilboa thinks leashes are useful for young kids or kids who are different in the way they think. But she also says that if a regular kid is still on a leash by the time they’re eight or nine, and they haven’t learned to listen without it, that might be a problem.
By that age, parents should be able to talk to their kids so they understand, instead of needing to use a leash.
