“No, but my ex-wife might,” Damon said, looking worried. “She’s the only one who would know if we had twins. I’m sorry, but I have to go,” he explained, rushing off to find answers.
Alone, Emily thought about Bradley’s adoption, which Jack, her late husband, had arranged. She wondered if Jack knew about a twin.
Jack got a call about a baby available for adoption just before Emily came home from the center where she was recovering from knee surgery.
When Emily got home, Jack was there with a baby boy wrapped in a dinosaur blanket. He looked really happy, and Emily thought the baby was the most beautiful she’d ever seen.
At home, Bradley noticed that Emily seemed worried.
“What’s wrong, Mom? Did that Damon guy do something bad to you? If he did—”
“Everything’s okay, honey,” she said, trying to smile, and quickly went to her bedroom.
There, Emily looked for Bradley’s adoption papers but couldn’t find them. She realized she had never seen them because she thought Jack had taken care of everything. This made her feel even more uneasy.
She changed into her home clothes and went to the attic, determined to find out the truth. In the dusty attic, she searched through Jack’s things, hoping to find answers with the fading light from her flashlight.
Jack’s sudden death had left Emily shocked. One day they were planning a family vacation, and the next day she got a call from the police.
Jack had a fatal brain aneurysm while driving home, causing his car to crash off the highway, leading to his death.
Emily struggled with grief and being a mom. She got her brother’s help to pack Jack’s stuff in the attic. Now, looking for answers about Bradley’s adoption, she found a letter from Jack.
Meanwhile, Damon went back to where his ex-wife, Naomi, lived. He hadn’t been there in three years. The place felt uneasy, with quiet staff and patients lost in their own worlds.
Naomi was cold when Damon arrived. He asked her about the night Jordan was born.
Naomi looked uncomfortable. “I already told you, Damon. A tall man said I had to leave, so I did. I don’t remember anything else!”
Damon and Naomi met in college and were happy together. They were excited when Naomi got pregnant soon after Damon started a new job at a big company. But things changed when Naomi got preeclampsia, a serious condition with bad headaches and blurry vision.
Naomi reacted strongly to the diagnosis. She quit her job and stopped seeing her doctor, thinking it was best to stay home and rest. But her health got worse, and she started getting paranoid, talking about a danger to their baby. One time while they were shopping, she said a tall man warned her, but nobody like that was around.
Naomi’s mental health kept getting worse, so Damon convinced her to see a psychologist. The psychologist said Naomi had stress-induced schizophrenia, a condition she had in her family but never told Damon about. This explained why she was acting strangely, but it made things even harder because she had both schizophrenia and preeclampsia.
As Naomi’s due date got closer, Damon was excited about their baby, but he was also worried about Naomi. Sadly, when there was only a month left of her pregnancy, Naomi disappeared suddenly. Damon looked everywhere for her but couldn’t find her. He even told the police, but she seemed to have vanished.
Damon couldn’t stop thinking about Naomi and searched for her every night. Then, the police called him one day and said they found Naomi in an alley, about to give birth. They took her to the hospital.
Damon rushed to the hospital, feeling a mix of emotions. Naomi was there, holding their new baby boy, Jordan. But then Naomi shocked him by saying she wanted a divorce and didn’t want to be a parent to Jordan.
Years later, Damon asked Naomi about their past. “Naomi, did you have twins?” he asked, hoping for answers.
“No, there weren’t any twins,” Naomi said, her mind confused because of her illness. “There was Jordan and something else. The tall man helped me… he took it away.”
Meanwhile, Emily was dealing with her own problems. She read Jack’s letter and found out he knew about his brain problem but didn’t tell her to protect her. He also admitted to finding a baby in an alley and changing the adoption papers to make Bradley their son.
“I found the baby and called the police. I was going to give the baby to them, but when I saw his face, I knew he was meant to be with us. I brought him home and changed the adoption papers. They might look okay, but they won’t hold up in court,” Jack wrote.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t do more for you, my dear Emily,” Jack wrote.
Emily held the letter close to her and cried. She thought about telling Damon that Bradley might be his son. While she hesitated, Damon called her.
“Hello?” Emily said nervously.
“I just talked to Naomi,” Damon said, getting into his car. “She has schizophrenia and said something strange about the night Jordan was born. It’s important, Emily.”
“Come over, Damon. I found something too,” she said.
At Emily’s house, Damon told Naomi’s story. “She thought she was having twins… she thought one was a parasite. She might have put the baby in a dumpster.”
“But I don’t think the baby was in a dumpster,” Emily said, giving Damon Jack’s letter.
“So, Jack saved my son?” Damon realized as he read the letter.
“Please don’t take Bradley away,” Emily begged. “I know you can, but please don’t.”
“I’m not taking anyone!” Bradley burst into the room, holding Jack’s rifle. “I’m not going with you!”
“I’m not here to take you, Bradley,” Damon said, raising his hands. “You’re Emily’s son. I won’t change that.”
Emily had been holding back her emotions until now. She hugged Damon and cried on his shoulder. After a few minutes, she smiled and went to talk to Bradley.
“Please, Bradley, put the rifle down,” Emily said. “I don’t like that you heard all this, but we can’t change it. Sit down, so Damon and I can talk to you.”
“Damon?” Bradley looked surprised, putting the gun against the wall. “The same Damon you had a date with?”
“Yes, but there’s something we need to explain,” Emily said. Bradley sat down, and Emily and Damon told him the truth.
“So, he’s my dad, and I have a twin brother?” Bradley asked.
“We think so,” Emily said. “A DNA test can tell us for sure.”
“Why me? Why did she give me up and not my brother?” Bradley asked Damon, sounding hurt.
