“David Foster and Katharine McPhee’s son, who is just 3 years old, impresses fans with his drumming skills onstage. People think he’s incredibly talented.”

When Rennie Foster was only three years old, he amazed everyone by showing off his drumming skills onstage with his parents. His mom shared a video of Rennie’s performance on Instagram, creating a special family moment that captivated the audience and hinted at a bright musical future for Rennie.

In a lovely display of young talent, Katharine McPhee and David Foster’s son, Rennie, who is only 3 years old, won over the audience during a performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on February 25th.

The famous musical pair brought their son onstage with them, where he showed off his drumming skills. McPhee posted about this special moment on Instagram, saying, “had a VERY special guest join us on stage for the first time.”

The video, which is a little over 30 seconds long, shows Rennie energetically playing the drums while his dad plays the piano and McPhee dances to the beat of “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion).” Even though Rennie seems really into playing the drums, the “American Idol” alum wanted to make something clear about the cute performance. She explained in the comments section:

“By the way… I hope people realize that JR -the legend-@johnjrrobinson1 -our incredible drummer is drumming & Rennie is only copying to the best of his ability unmic’d- and it was cute to watch his first on stage debut.”

The video has become really popular with fans, who are impressed by the couple’s talented son. One person said, “Oh my gosh, he’s so good, I can’t handle it. Bring him to every show!” Others commented on how adorable Rennie looked onstage, saying things like, “This is the cutest thing ever” and “My heart. This is the most precious thing I’ve ever seen.”

Fans also noticed where Rennie got his talent from. One person said to McPhee, “He’s got amazing talent! It’s obvious he got both of your musical genes!” Another fan said, “I love it… Mom cheering on her future star, Rennie Foster, from the sidelines!”

Even before this recent performance, Rennie’s drumming skills had already caught people’s attention. In January, his mom posted a TikTok video showing off his musical talent. In the video, Rennie plays the drums energetically to Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” on his own red drum set. His dad watches from the side, sometimes giving him tips.

In the text written on the video, McPhee says, “My 2-year-old baby is a genius.” Then she shows the camera the way to the room where Rennie is playing the drums. Rennie, wearing a gray T-shirt and headphones, is totally focused, playing along perfectly with the rhythm of Michael Jackson’s music. Foster seems to really enjoy watching, nodding along with the beat.

Rennie celebrated his third birthday last week, and the family went to Disney World to mark the occasion. McPhee shared their fun trip on Instagram. They went on lots of rides and had a great time, except for one ride that made them feel sick.

McPhee was happily surprised when Rennie met Mickey Mouse because he wasn’t scared at all. He even gave Mickey a high-five, while McPhee gave him an awkward hug. They also enjoyed watching a pianist play, and Foster liked the performance. They tried lots of delicious food, including pastries. A special moment happened when Rennie pretended to play the drums with straws during their meal, and his dad joined in on the fun.

At just three years old, Rennie’s appearance in the spotlight shows more than just his talent. It also shows how his parents raise him.
Even though they have a good life together, McPhee and Foster have different ways of parenting because they come from different generations.

Foster, who has five grown children already, likes to discipline in a traditional way. He thinks it’s time to start making rules for Rennie, but McPhee doesn’t completely agree. She prefers a gentler approach, where patience and understanding are more important than punishment, like using time-outs.

“In my opinion, it’s better to be mindful in parenting rather than just expecting a two or three-year-old to sit alone and think about what they did wrong,” McPhee shared in November.
Even though they have different ways of disciplining their child—McPhee describes Foster’s approach as “results-based”—they don’t argue about it. Instead, they respect each other’s opinions.

McPhee believes that discipline is something they should work on together, gradually, as Rennie gets older. She thinks it’s important for Rennie to learn about personal space and good behavior from interacting with people outside the family, like teachers and classmates.
Their story, along with Rennie’s early musical talents, shows how they’re trying to raise him to be a kind and well-rounded person. Even though they have different ways of doing things, their main goal is to raise Rennie with love, respect, and patience.
