Dennis Quaid says that his faith saved him from a life of addiction. He feels thankful to be alive every single day.

When life gets tough, many of us turn to faith for help, just like Dennis Quaid does. “I’m thankful to still be here, I’m thankful to be alive every day,” Quaid told People magazine. “It’s important to enjoy your journey in life as much as you can, because there are a lot of challenges that can knock you down.”

Quaid’s struggles are something many people face.

After starting his career successfully, Dennis Quaid faced struggles with addiction. Eventually, he decided to go to rehab, which he jokingly called “cocaine school.”

He recalls a moment when he went home and had a realization. He saw himself either ending up dead, in jail, or losing everything he had, and he didn’t want that to happen.

The 69-year-old actor and musician talked about how people struggling with addiction are trying to fill an empty space inside themselves. But once they stop the addiction, they need something else to fill that gap, something that feels just as good.

For Quaid, his faith helped fill that void.
He wrote a song for his mother to reassure her that he was okay, because he wasn’t okay before then. He also started reading different religious books like the Bible and Quran.

“That’s when I started forming a personal connection,” he remembered. “Before that, I didn’t have one, even though I grew up as a Christian.”

Quaid still relies on his faith today. He’s working on releasing a new album called “Fallen: A Gospel Record For Sinners.” He describes the songs as being about self-reflection and self-examination, not necessarily religious.

He believes that everyone has a connection with God, regardless of whether they’re Christian or not.

“We all want to feel happy in life, and drugs or alcohol can give you that feeling fast. But then they can cause problems. What we’re really searching for is the joy of living, which is a gift we all have from our connection with God. That’s the real happiness of being alive.”

I give so much credit to Dennis Quaid for choosing sobriety and sticking with it. It’s not an easy thing to do. No doubt that relying on his faith has helped him along the way.
