We’re always trying to improve cats’ lives. Along with vet care and expert advice, there are simple things you can do at home. One easy thing you can try is acupressure, which is like giving your cat a relaxing massage.
Note: This is just for learning purposes. Always check with your vet if you’re worried about your cat’s health.
Simple Acupressure Techniques for Cats
Recently, Dr. Gary Richter, a vet and author, shared some easy tips to help cats feel less anxious. It’s something anyone can do, and honestly, we could all use it right now! He demonstrates simple ways to use acupressure with gentle touches. It’s meant to help them relax, but it might relax you too!
These techniques are like acupuncture, but don’t worry, no needles are involved. It’s just gentle touches, and it should always be gentle. If your cat doesn’t seem to like it, stop. And it’s best to try it on a cat that already trusts you.
“Acupressure is something you can do at home. It’s like acupuncture, but without needles. You just use your fingertips,” he explains.
A Cat with a Purr Like a Chainsaw
Even though there aren’t any needles involved, there’s a cat named Chainsaw! In the video, Richter works with this kitty, who got his name because his purring sounds like a chainsaw. What a funny and fitting name!
“He purrs so loudly, it’s like a chainsaw! You can hear it from across the room š,” Richter explained.
Richter tries two acupuncture techniques with Chainsaw. In the first one, he gently rubs in a tight circle right in the middle of the cat’s head using just one finger (check out the video). After about 30 seconds, Chainsaw appears to be more relaxed.
Next, Richter demonstrates another simple technique, applying very gentle thumb pressure behind each ear. With a circular motion, we see that Chainsaw reaches a state of pure bliss in under 30 seconds. We bet he got that chainsaw purring action going!
If your cat isnāt too stressed out, these simple techniques could help calm them down, even at the vetās office. But if your cat is too scared for any touch, thatās okay too! Just being there and speaking to them in a calm, soothing voice can make a big difference. You can find more suggestions here.
“Here’s how to help your cat feel peaceful: Acupressure for Cats! š±āØ Say bye-bye to stress and anxiety with these gentle techniques!” Richter shared.
Acupressure and Other Holistic TherapiesĀ
Richter is not only a holistic vet but also the author of “Longevity for Cats: A Holistic, Individualized Approach to Helping Your Feline Friend Live Longer and Healthier.” The book discusses ways to enhance both the lifespan and overall health of your cat, from their kitten years to their senior stage.
He views cats as fascinating and unique creatures with their own set of needs. In recent years, there has been a shift in veterinary practices to treat cats more appropriately, moving away from treating them like small dogs. This change has been influenced by the “Fear Free” initiative in veterinary care, which aims to make vet visits less stressful for cats by considering their emotional well-being as well as their physical health.
“We now approach cats with much more respect and understanding of their perspective,” he explained in an interview with the Community Cats Podcast.
Integrating Holistic Practices Like Acupressure with Traditional Vet Care
In addition to traditional veterinary methods, Dr. Richter also uses holistic treatments like acupuncture, chiropractic care, physical therapy, and even cannabis when necessary. He believes that combining these alternative treatments with conventional care can lead to better results for many pets’ health.
He has observed particularly remarkable improvements in cats with long-term health problems.
