Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling had an unspoken agreement that she would stop acting and stay home with their kids. Mendes explained on the “Today” show that they both agreed he would work outside the home while she took care of their daughters, Esmeralda (9) and Amada (7). Mendes, who is 50 years old and known for her role in “Hitch,” said it was an obvious choice for her to pause her acting career to be with their children more.
Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling had a “non-verbal agreement” that she would give up acting when they became parents.
“It was almost just like a non-verbal agreement that it was like, ‘Ok, he’s going to work and I’m going to work, I’m just going to work here,’” Mendes said on the “Today” show.
The couple share daughters Esmeralda and Amada.
“I feel really fortunate,” she said, talking about being able to spend time with her children. Mendes also explained that she still has a job, but she’s not acting anymore since becoming a mom. She said, “I still worked, but I didn’t act because acting involves going to different places, which would take me away from home.”
Mendes said her decision to be a stay-at-home mom was a “no-brainer.”
The “Hitch” star said she still does other work that’s not acting.
Mendes mentioned that she mostly stopped acting after she and her partner starred in the 2012 movie “The Place Beyond the Pines.” She talked about their experience working together on the film.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Mendes said about Gosling’s work ethic and dedication to his craft. She praised how he wants everything to be the best it can be, including his co-stars. “But unfortunately — or fortunately — there’s only one Ryan!” she joked.
Mendes also praised Gosling’s performance at the 2024 Oscars, where he sang his song from the movie “Barbie,” titled “I’m Just Ken.”
One of the last movies she acted in was her 2012 film with Gosling, “The Place Beyond the Pines.
“I still worked, I just didn’t act because acting takes you on locations, it takes you away,” Mendes explained.
“He went and did his work. He’s just really good at it, and then he came back home,” Mendes said.
She mentioned the funny post she shared on Instagram that night, where she jokingly told Gosling to “come home” and “put the kids to bed.”
“That’s what it’s all about,” she said. “You go, you do your job as best as you can, and then you come back home.”
Mendes said she feels “lucky” to be able to spend time with their children.
Mendes supported Gosling during his 2024 Oscars performance.
Mendes was backstage before the 96th Academy Awards to support Gosling, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Gosling, who is 43 years old, also shared that their daughters went to his dress rehearsal and gave him some advice.
“It was amazing,” the “La La Land” star said at the SXSW festival. “It was really fun because they came to the dress rehearsal the day before and sat in the front row. They gave me some tips and notes, all of which were great.”
