The state police said they won’t release body camera footage or other information right away to ensure a fair investigation.

Deputies from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Massey’s home just before 1 a.m. after she reported a prowler. The sheriff’s office said shots were fired around 1:21 a.m., and Massey was hit. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

No deputies were injured, and details about what led to the shooting haven’t been released.

Ben Crump, the attorney for Massey’s family, said she called the police because she was scared of an intruder and ended up being shot by the officers. He demanded the release of the body camera footage so that the public and Massey’s family can understand what happened.

Many protesters gathered outside the Sangamon County Building, including Massey’s mother, Donna, to call for justice.

The Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office have not commented further. Sheriff Jack Campbell asked the public to be patient while they investigate the incident. The state police are working closely with the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office on the case.
