Katy Perry defended working with Dr. Luke on her upcoming album “143,” even though he’s been accused of drugging and raping Kesha.
During an interview on Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Katy, 39, was asked why she chose to work with him. She explained, “I know it sparked a lot of conversations. He was just one of many people I worked with, but in the end, the music comes from me.”
Katy Perry explained that she wrote the songs on her new album based on her personal experiences, and Dr. Luke was just one of the people who helped her along the way, as a writer and producer.
Katy, whose real name is Katheryn Hudson, said the new project, coming out on Sept. 20, reflects her own life. She talked about feeling empowered, especially as a mother, referring to her song “Woman’s World.” She said being a mom, giving birth, and creating life made her feel strong, sharing that she’s proud of creating a whole new human, including a heart and brain. Katy has a 4-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove, with her fiancé Orlando Bloom.
Katy Perry, who said she’s “still a matriarch,” explained that she worked with different collaborators on her new album, including some she worked with during her “Teenage Dream” days.
In 2014, Kesha sued Dr. Luke, accusing him of drugging and raping her after a party in 2005. Kesha, now 37, also said that Dr. Luke, who is 50, was sexually, physically, and verbally abusive during the 10 years they worked together. She claimed that his actions led to her developing an eating disorder.
Dr. Luke denied Kesha’s accusations and sued her, saying her claims were “false and shocking” and damaged his reputation.
In April 2016, a judge dismissed all of Kesha’s claims of sexual assault, harassment, and gender violence in New York. Four months later, Kesha dropped her lawsuit against Dr. Luke in California.
The legal battle between them was finally settled in June 2023. Kesha said in a statement at the time, “Only God knows what happened that night, as I have always said. I cannot remember everything that happened.”
Kesha said she was excited to move on from this part of her life and start a new chapter.
Dr. Luke kept saying he was innocent, insisting he was “absolutely certain that nothing happened.” He claimed he never drugged or assaulted Kesha and would never do that to anyone. He added that he’s been fighting to clear his name for nearly 10 years for the sake of his family.
