Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are both big stars. It’s easy to forget that they’ve been married for more than thirty years.
When Kyra was 12, she met Kevin, who was 7 years older, after watching a movie he starred in with her brother.
They met again ten years later while working on a movie called Lemon Sky. Kyra didn’t think Kevin was her type at first. She even remembers looking at his butt and thinking, “Well, I guess some girls like that.”
But she changed her mind, and they got married the next year, in 1988.
They had a private wedding in Connecticut and then a big reception at a club in Manhattan called Au Bar. Kevin and Kyra got engaged on Christmas Eve in 1987. They only invited friends and family to their reception.
Kevin Bacon children
Not long after they got married, they had their first child, Travis Sedgwick Bacon. Their second child, Sosie Ruth, was born in 1992.
Sosie is an actress like her parents and played Skye Miller in the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why”. Travis is a musician and has written music for a movie his parents were in called “Story of a Girl”.
Now, 34 years later, the couple is celebrating their anniversary and they’re really happy. Their long marriage is almost like a miracle in Hollywood.
Kyra said in an interview with Redbook in 2008 that if someone had told her at 22 that she would meet the man she’d marry and have a child by 23, she wouldn’t have believed them.
Kevin still loves his wife a lot, and he always celebrates their anniversary. They both often share messages of love for each other on their Instagram accounts.
Their love story had its tough times too.
Kevin Bacon once said to reporters that when he felt like he was at his lowest point, that’s when he met his wife. It was also when their kids were born and good things were happening. He mentioned that being able to support himself during those times always gave him strength.
Lost a lot of money
The couple shared that their journey hasn’t always been easy. They opened up about losing their life savings in 2008 when Bernie Madoff, who was behind one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history, took their money.
Some say Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick lost $100 million, but others suggest it was more like $30-$40 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
Even though they lost a lot of money, both Kevin and Kyra had jobs, so they didn’t lose everything.
Kevin Bacon said in an interview with The Guardian that it was a tough time, but they managed to see all the good things they still had—like their children, their health, their love for each other, and their nice home. They got through it together. He added that he doesn’t think about Madoff and what happened much anymore.
First cousins
On a TV show called “Finding Your Roots,” Kyra found out something surprising: she and Kevin are distant cousins, ninth cousins once removed, to be exact.
They learned this through a DNA test, and it made Kevin feel a bit weird. Kyra said she had a feeling about it but still found it a little unsettling. However, she was fine with it as long as they weren’t close cousins like first cousins.
PBS looked into Kevin’s family history and found out that his 22nd great grandfather was King Edward I, who fought William Wallace. Kevin joked that his own ancestry didn’t get as much attention. He also mentioned the earlier discovery that he and his wife were distant cousins.
“It felt like a joke on me, you know,” he said.
But despite the surprising discovery, Kevin and Kyra moved forward, and their love has only gotten stronger over the years.
Love in quarantine
Recently, they got to spend more time together during quarantine at their home in LA.
“I’ve been doing some writing, although I’m not sure if I’m any good at it,” Kyra told People magazine.
“We’re just trying to find things to do. We’re watching a lot of shows and reading. I’m still trying to focus on my work every day,” she added.
Kyra says her husband always makes her feel special, no matter where they are.
“He somehow makes me feel like I’m the most beautiful woman in the room, like I’m the only one,” Kyra said to People.
She also thinks their strong connection in the bedroom is important.
“Sex is really important. We still have that desire for each other,” she told Redbook in 2012.
In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bacon shared some marriage advice: “Don’t take advice from celebrities on how to stay married.”
Kyra, on the other hand, spoke to Good Housekeeping in 2012 about what she loves about her husband.
“He’s really honorable and has strong ethics. He has high moral standards, and he’s honest and faithful—and I find that attractive!” she said. “I’m always amazed by Kevin’s calmness and how he’s not ‘crazy’.”
