Carlos and his wife, Erica Morales, had a hard time getting married. But when they finally did, it was a really happy day. Then they had four kids, which Carlos said was the best day ever. But then something really sad happened.
Something really sad happened after the happy times: Carlos’s wife passed away after giving birth. Now, in Phoenix, Arizona, Carlos is raising their four kids by himself – three girls and one boy.
Two of the kids came home to Morales shortly after they were born in January. The other two joined the family last week. Morales said, “It feels really good to have all four.” He appeared Wednesday with all four babies. They’re all healthy and gaining weight. “It was a stroke of luck,” he said. “We’re just trying our best. I really feel very, really grateful to everyone who came together and helped us,” he said.
The dad talked about how the community is helping with material support and financial donations through the GoFundMe page. Sondra Bridges, Erica’s mom, moved in with her son-in-law to take care of the babies: Tracy, Paisley, Erica, and Carlos Jr. Like Morales, she also said she’s grateful for the support their family keeps getting. “It’s funny how things turned out. It’s bittersweet, but at the same time, thanks to God and the overwhelming support of the public, it’s been phenomenal,” she said.
“I want to thank each and every one of you. We appreciate all the support we get from you guys. Nothing in my life has made me this happy.” But then Erica, still under anesthesia, quickly fell into hypovolemic shock, an emergency involving massive blood loss. She passed away within hours.
Even though he was very sad, Morales told the magazine he stayed strong for his children. He said, “These kids still don’t know what blessings they’ve given me. They’ve given me four reasons to live.”
