Some brave people came to help after a woman found a cat stuck on her neighbor’s ledge.

Cats really enjoy sitting on window ledges or balconies, especially when they can relax in the sun. But sometimes, being out on a ledge can turn into a problem. That’s what happened to this lovely cat. She was playing with her brother one moment, and suddenly found herself stuck on a window ledge.

This cute black and white cat was having a great time playing with her brother on their balcony. But then something went really wrong, and she ended up sitting on a neighbor’s window ledge!

Her mom couldn’t reach the window, so she couldn’t rescue her. That’s when the cat’s mom called Alexandria’s Animal Services for help. According to a post on the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria’s Facebook page:

“Unfortunately, since nobody was home, they couldn’t get to the window.”

But don’t worry, Animal Services came to help! Officer Scott Valdovinos and his trainee, Jennifer Yang, arrived at the scene. They checked out the situation with their boss, Chief Officer Tony Rankin. Luckily, they quickly came up with a plan to rescue the scared kitty. Yang and Valdovinos stood below with a blanket in case the cat fell. Meanwhile, Rankin tried to reach her from the balcony and bring her to safety.

Heroes Come to the Rescue

We usually think cats can always land on their feet, right? But when they’re on a really high ledge, things can get risky! For example, when this kitty tried to walk over to Officer Rankin, she slipped and fell off the ledge! Thankfully, Officers Yang and Valdovinos were there at the bottom with the blanket to catch her. (Still got 8 lives left, kitty, so stay safe!)

The kitty landed gently in the blanket and wasn’t hurt. Just to be sure, Rankin took the kitty and her mom to the local animal hospital to check for any injuries. Luckily, the kitty was perfectly okay after her scary experience.

“Even though the cat seemed fine, Chief Rankin helped her mom take her to the animal hospital just to make sure she was completely okay – and she was! Our officers were happy they could help in a scary situation. Most of the story was told in our post, but I also want to mention that when our team checked the cat and she seemed okay, the owner didn’t have a car. So, Chief Rankin drove the owner and the cat to the emergency ER to make sure she was safe and healthy – and she was,” said AWLA Alexandria.

There are lots of ways to make sure your balcony is safe for your cat, so they don’t end up in a scary situation like this. One option is to make a “catio” for your cat. These are like outdoor spaces for cats, but they’re built into windows, so your cat can enjoy the outside while staying safe inside. Another idea is to put up netting around your balcony. That way, if your cat gets out, they won’t be able to go anywhere outside the balcony.

For people living on the first floor with apartments or patios, a simple trick could be to put light bulbs along the railings and roof. This might keep some cats away from the edges, but it won’t stop the more adventurous ones (so you’ll need to keep an eye on them). But if you’re higher up in the building, it’s best to create a fully enclosed catio to keep your cat safe.

And speaking of adventurous cats, let’s take a look back at the outdoor area made for Cole, Marm, Jugg, and Zig Zag in 2019!
