Steve Lawrence, a famous singer and performer who was well-known both as a solo artist and as part of the duo Steve & Eydie with his wife Eydie Gorme, passed away on Thursday at the age of 88. He had complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to Susan DuBow, a spokesperson for the family.

Steve Lawrence was born Sidney Liebowitz in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a Jewish cantor and house painter. Steve began singing at a young age, starting in his father’s synagogue choir at 8 years old. As he grew up, he started performing in bars and clubs, and he chose his stage name by combining the names of two of his nephews.
