Life can be really tough for stray animals. They don’t have a home or shelter, so they have to find their own food and water, and they have no protection from the weather. We often hear stories of dogs suffering in the freezing cold, and how kind people open their doors to keep them warm. But dogs can also suffer in extreme heat. On one hot day, when it was a blazing 104°F in Mexico, a stray dog visited a local market where he had been coming for a few days.
“The dog has been coming here for the past few days,” said the store clerk, as reported by The Dodo. “We think his owner left him behind. He came to us looking for help.”
“We could only give him food, water, and some toys from the store that we paid for ourselves.” But on this hot day, they went a step further: They let the dog come inside to cool off!
The dog seemed to really enjoy the break from the extreme heat. He was so comfy that he just laid down on the floor of the aisle for a nap.
“We let him inside because it’s really hot outside,” the clerk said. “We feel sorry for him, but he seems happier here in the store.”
The kindness of the clerks rubbed off on a customer named Adolfo Pazzi Ahumada, who was at the market to buy some milk. He decided to buy a treat for the dog.
“I felt sorry for what the dog has been through,” Adolfo told The Dodo. “But now he’s getting the love he deserves.”
Thanks to this store for letting the dog inside! We know this small act of kindness meant everything to this stray.
