Jimmy Carter, who used to be the President of the United States, has decided to stop getting medical treatment and has gone into hospice care. He’s 98 years old. This decision came after he had been in and out of the hospital a few times.
“Former US President Jimmy Carter has decided to spend his last days at home with his family and accept hospice care instead of more medical treatment,” the statement said.
“His family and medical team fully support his decision,” it added. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and thanks everyone for their concerns.
President Carter led the country for four years, from 1977 to 1981. He started the Carter Center in 1982, which has helped many humanitarian projects.
President Carter got the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 because he helped start the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This center helps prevent diseases around the world and works on elections and peace talks.
In 1994, he went to North Korea to talk about peace for President Bill Clinton. Then, in 2007, he joined The Elders, a group of important leaders who work on peace and human rights.
When President George H.W. Bush died in 2019 at 94, President Carter became the oldest living president.
In 2015, he found out he had cancer that had spread. He didn’t say where it started. Later that year, he said doctors found melanoma in his brain and liver. He got treatment with radiation and medicine to boost his immune system. By December 2015, his tests showed no more cancer.
In 2019, the politician fell a few times and had to have surgery in the hospital. The surgery was to help with the pressure on his brain from the bleeding caused by the falls.
Since he stopped being a politician forty years ago, he’s written 30 books. The newest one came out just five years ago.
Before the COVID-19 outbreak, Jimmy kept teaching Sunday school in Plains, Georgia. He and his wife Rosalynn, who got married in 1946, would spend a week every year helping with Habitat for Humanity.
Jimmy and Rosalynn have three sons: Jack, James III, and Donnel, and one daughter named Amy. They also have 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
