After being married for 35 years, Tom Hanks still can’t stop talking about Rita Wilson, the same amazing woman he fell for when they first met on the show Bosom Buddies.
Recently, when some people criticized Rita online for her appearance, Hanks defended her passionately. He openly shared his love and admiration for Rita, calling her “one of the most classically beautiful women who’s ever walked the planet Earth.”
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are often seen as a rare example of enduring love in Hollywood. They first met in 1981 on the set of Bosom Buddies, where Hanks was a regular on the show. Wilson appeared in one episode as a character who dates his friend.
Back then, Tom Hanks was married to his high school sweetheart Samantha Lewes, and they had a son named Colin Hanks together.
However, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who both worked on the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, were meant to be together.
“Rita and I just looked at each other and – bam – that was it,” said the star of Forrest Gump. “I asked Rita if she felt the same way, and it was undeniable.”
In 1988, Tom Hanks divorced Samantha Lewes and married Rita Wilson. They had worked together previously in the 1985 movie Volunteers.
Now both 67 years old, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who have two sons named Chet and Truman, marked their 35th wedding anniversary in April 2023.
During the last thirty years, they have appeared in many movies together, such as Bonfire of the Vanities and Sleepless in Seattle, and have always supported each other with love.
“I’ll never forget it. We were standing on the corner of 57th and 5th in New York, or maybe it was 58th and 5th,” Wilson recalled about her husband. “We were holding hands, waiting for the traffic light to change. He looked at me and said, ‘You know, I just want you to know, that you never have to change anything about who you are to be with me.’ It was like a wave of love, a feeling that went through me. That’s who he is and how he’s always been.”
In 2015, when Wilson underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction due to breast cancer, she felt grateful for her husband’s support.
“You never know how your spouse will react in a situation like this. I was amazed by the care my husband showed me,” she said. “Who would have thought it would bring us even closer?”
And who could forget 2020, when the famous couple announced early in the Covid pandemic that they both tested positive?
“I think having the virus at the same time made it a bit easier,” said Wilson, who is also a singer-songwriter. “We took care of each other instead of one person taking care of the other and not getting any support or understanding that the person at home needs a break.”
In 2022, while they were in New York City promoting Elvis, a film starring Hanks, the actor and filmmaker showed his protective side when a fan accidentally tripped his wife as they were walking from the building to their car.
Usually calm and collected, Hanks snapped at the crowd of fans, saying, “Guys, this is my wife. Back off! Knocking over my wife?!”
Hanks received praise for being a caring and protective husband.
That same year, some photos surfaced of Wilson, who has experienced weight changes over time, and she became the target of mean comments online. People compared her to an “unmade bed” and criticized her appearance, calling her “flabby.”
“Tom looks fit, but Rita looks out of shape and flabby,” one person wrote. Another anonymous critic said, “Rita Wilson has really let herself go.”
Before Hanks could respond, others online stepped in to defend Wilson. She had worked alongside Hanks as a producer on their 2022 movie A Man Called Otto, in which Hanks also acted.
One supporter said, “Hey, Mr. NoProfilePic, show us your perfect body before you judge others so harshly…” Another defended, “Come on, as we get older, our bodies naturally change a lot. I think she looks fantastic!” And another added, “Real beauty comes from within, you fool.”
As for Hanks, he says his wife is “extremely brave and beautiful,” and “one of the most classically beautiful women who’s ever walked the planet Earth.”
“I’m a lucky man,” he previously said.
